French Ondine's syndrome association

The central hypoventilation syndrome, also known as Ondine's Curse, is a failure of central nervous system control over breathing mainly while asleep. Children suffering from the syndrome cannot breathe without assistance even if their lungs work and therefore need mechanical ventilation during sleep from birth onwards and indefinitely. The association aims to forge links between the parents of children with Ondine's Syndrome and the children themselves.

  • Bouygues has been making annual donations since 2001 to finance a research grant for the central hypoventilation syndrome.

French Medical Institute for Children in Kabul

In light of the appalling sanitary conditions in Afghanistan, which particularly affect women and children (one in six children does not live to the age of five), La Chaîne de l'Espoir humanitarian organisation, together with actress Muriel Robin and journalist Marine Jacquemin, in November 2001 set up the Enfants Afghans programme in order to bring long-term and tangible medical assistance to children in Afghanistan by building a hospital worthy of the name.
The French Medical Institute for Children, called the Mother and Child Hospital up until April 2006, seeks to help rebuild Afghanistan's health system by offering the country and those most in need the best medical and surgical techniques and equipment.
The hospital has been fully operational since August 2005.
It is managed jointly by La Chaîne de l'Espoir and the Aga Khan Development Network.
Some 318 Afghans work for the network and 4,000 children have been saved.

A Social Welfare Fund has been set up to provide health care for Afghan children in need.
